The Washington Post explains the background to the Senate's current debate over whether phone companies should be held legally responsible for cooperating with the U.S. government to violate your privacy.
Read the article and then answer the following questions. Please connect the article specifically in your post.
1. Does the U.S. government have the right to listen in on your phone conversations? If yes, why? If no, is there a situation where the government would have the right to listen in on your phone conversations?
2. If your phone company allows the government to wiretap your phone without a warrant do you think you should have the right to sue your phone company? Why? Should other people have this right?

1/28 - Post 1: The Death Penalty
This is your first post! I thought we'd start with a topic you probably have an opinion about: the death penalty!
The Supreme Court recently heard a case that asked them to consider whether or not lethal injection is cruel and unusual punishment and violates the 8th Amendment. The Court was not debating the issue of whether the state should be able to kill someone, but instead what methods of killing should be constitutional.
Read one of the articles from the links below and answer the following questions in your post:

1. Do you think the death penalty is cruel and unusual? Do you think that the use of lethal injection is cruel and unusual?
2. How do you think the Supreme Court should rule and why?

Your tasks with this project are:
Objectives:
*To become proficient in the current discussion of legal issues in the news
*To have an intelligent dialogue regarding the law with your peers
*To become more comfortable with an emerging technology in the field of political science (blogging)
Student Tasks:
*You must have an email account to do this assignment. If you do not have one please see the instructor for help.
*You will need to use your time in the computer lab well and will need to use a computer once a week on your own. Each week we will go to the computer lab on Monday and you'll be given work time to complete your blog post. If you are absent on a Monday, you'll need to do this at home to make up the assignment. You will have until class time the next Monday to respond online to the post of at least one classmate of your choice.
*Your post should address the news article or articles I have selected or ones that you select.
*Each post should be a full paragraph and use correct grammar and spelling.
*Your response post should comment on or attack the argument of a peer – not the peer her or himself. There is an expectation by the instructor & the administration that the same standards for behavior & respect at school apply to the blog.
*You must post online in a timely manner. Your posts will be due Monday each week. You need to post by the due date in order for other students to respond on time. Late posts will not receive full credit.
*You are not required to represent your own personal opinions. You can play “devil’s advocate” in order to challenge each other & move the conversation forward. It is the instructor’s belief that all sides of the argument be understood in order to appreciate the complexity of the issue.
*You should not use “text message” language in your posts. This is an academic blog and should use formal language.
