Post 3 - 3/26

Read the article Do Juvenile Killer Deserve Life Behind Bars? about the cases the U.S. Supreme Court is considering. Then answer the following questions:

1. Should juveniles be treated differently from adults if they commit murder? Why or why not? Or in what situations?

2. What do you think the U.S. Supreme Court should rule?

1. I think that juveniles should not get the life sentence of behind bars. While I certainly believe that they should be punished severely because of the gravity of the actions they did I don't believe that they should get that maximum sentence. Since the human brain doesn't fully mature until age 25 the actions that they did when they were teenagers aren't exactly thoughtful actions. Also when you are a teenager your emotions are all hightened with hormones and such. So juvenilies should be punished severely they sholudn't get the life sentence.
2. I think they should rule guilty by association and give him due time and then eventually let him out.

I think in the Alabama one they should give him a certain senence but certainly not as much as the other people because he was never cut a deal and because he was just there.

I think that childern under the age of twenty should not be given life without parole because of their youth and inexperience.

The supreme court should give both kids 20 years with parole.

They should be treated the same because they are not retarded. They know that are consequences. At age of 12 they should know from right and wrong.
2. What do you think the U.S. Supreme Court should rule?
They should treat them as adults at the age of 12.

I think that they should because they are still young and even though they know right from wrong their brains aren'y fully developed yet. I think that if your young that you shouldn't be able to get life in prison because then your there for the rest of your life when you made a mistake as a juvenile.

2. What do you think the U.S. Supreme Court should rule?

I think they should get a punishment that's not an easy one but I don't think that they should get life in prison.

I think they shouldn't be treated differently but they should be sentenced differently. They shouldn't suffer their whole life for one mistake they did when they were a kid. If we let this happen then what won't stop us from killing a child or increasing on sentencing for adults.
2. What do you think the U.S. Supreme Court should rule?
That it is unconstitutional and that this boy should get parole at least because he might change later in life everyone makes a mistake in their life, but this kid needs a chance to at least show that he has been rehabilitated.

-I think that they should be treated a little differently. Although they are old enough to make their own decisions, they are still under age. So in cases like murders or basically any thing else that would have someone go to prison.

2. What do you think the U.S. Supreme Court should rule?

-I think that they should have it so they look at them the same as the adults. Although, when they are looking at the persons sentence, they should lower it if they are under age Maybe even give a different option to do work in prison to lower it even more because of the fact that they are under age.

In something like a murder trial for someone who is 14, it is usually an accident. Juveniles need to be treated differently. They are young, impulsive, and stupid. In the past we have seen that there are kids that have been put into prison and have come out a completely different person, with goals and a future. If juveniles can't be considered for rehabilitation then why are adults? Those that are younger are more easily influenced and can be rehabilitated.

The Supreme Court should have a higher age for the ability to receive life without the chance of parole. Those that have taken the death penalty off the table for juveniles have already taken into consideration for the age of the criminal, this is no different. Age should be a factor.

Normally yes juvenieles should be treated differentlty from adults when dealing with a murder because they are still young and the amout of pear preassure that they are put in and their inability to face them the right way must be put into thought. When an adolescent is told by a friend to do something there will be a different response when an adult is told by a friend to do something. Adults can be deemed responsible for their actions because they have full knowledge of the trouble they could get into and they are also aware of the dangers of the crime they are comitting. But if it is a case of premeditated murder or it is a cruel and horrific murder then no a juvenile cannot be treated differently than an adult because they are well aware of what they are doing. I believe the courts should rule that it depends on the extent of the crime to determine if in any case a juvenile can be tried the same as an adult.

I think they should be punished severely but they should not be put into prison for the rest of their lives. theres always room for improvement?

2. What do you think the U.S. Supreme Court should rule?
Rule him guilty but eventually give him time to learn better. and eventually let him out.

1. Juveniles should definitely be treated differently from adults if they commit murder because as a juvenile, one does not have all the same real-life experiences as an adult. However, experiences do not make you an adult, but the time allowed for one to mature helps in making thoughtful actions. Juveniles are also much more likely to give into peer pressure, which can lead to unthoughtful actions. I believe that in no situation should a 14 year old, or younger, be treated the same as an adult, due to their age and life experiences. I do feel though that at the age of 16 people have matured more, and should be held more accountable, even if not treated exactly like an adult.

2. I think that the US Supreme Court should rule that no juvenile should be sentenced to life without parole, but that the length of the sentence and the terms of the parole should be left up to the states.

yes, those underage have very different reasoning ability than adults. I agree with much of what the article said on this. On thing I would like to add is that the thought of life without parole is never going to stop a murder. why? because murders 100% crimes of extreme emotions, not a whole lot of logic goes into them other than how not to get caught after. Yes minors are treated differently by the law in many situations so i think this one should be treated differently as well.

2. What do you think the U.S. Supreme Court should rule?
they should find that it is cruel and unusual punishment to put a minor to jail for life with no chance of parole

1.I think juveniles should be treated differently than adults, when it comes to murder, because they are still young and they give into peer pressure more easily.

2. I think the Supreme Court should make a program where these juveniles could go to understand what they did wrong and how they can become better citizens.

Juveniles should be treated differently from adults if they commit a murder. They are not fully developed and their rationale is much different than that of an adult. They are completely different and because of that we have limits on what youth can do.

2. What do you think the U.S. Supreme Court should rule?
The Supreme Court should not give him the death penalty and possibly not even life in jail. They should find a way to give him some sort of second chance.
