Post 7

Monday, May 7th Two weeks ago the US Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the controversial Arizona immigration law referred to as SB1070. We won't know until this summer what the Court will rule but many are trying to predict what the Court will say. Read the article from the Washington Post and write a paragraph summarizing your opinion on the law and what you think the Supreme Court should do.

The new immigration law would be detrimental to society health and security. Not only does this law make rampant racial profiling easy, it also makes the descent into corruption far steeper.
The supreme court should find this law unconstitutional.

My opinion is that I think that the states should be able implement their own laws with immigration as long as those laws dont directly contradict the laws set down by the Constitution. So with this law I think that it is good for cracking down on illegal immigration as long as they don't abuse it. I think that the Supreme Court should rule that this law does not directly contradict what the Constitution says and so therefore can be upheld as a state law.

That law is racist. This targets the hispanic people of Arizona. Not every hispanic in Arizona is an illegal immigrant. They should ban this law.

I believe that having a state and federal idea for immigration is sending mixed messages. The federal government should be able to see over what the state decides is right but due to the geography differences the states need to have say in what is regulated. Arizona is much different from Minnesota and they need different rights and procedures than those that are in Minnesota as well as other states.

I believe that this law is racial insensitive because of the profiling it can do with many people that are there. This could lead to terrible backlashes in other states because of this law states could start making there own law. If we let this happen we might just go back to segregation all over again. The Supreme Court should vote no as this law is somewhat racist and its the governments duty to control immigration not the state.

I believe the law is unfair to anyone who isn't a citizen. this would make officers very upset and their jobs very difficult. This would make any non citizen unable to be helped by law enforcement, making any and all illegal citizen of the United States a target to crimes. this would also violate rights of basic living.

I think this law would be good as long as it didn't contradict anything else in the constitution and it wasn't abused. It would be crucial that they substantial information about the individual(s)

I think states should create their own immigration laws, as long as they obey the constitution. For this case I think the state of Arizona should make their own immigration laws that don't interfere with immigrant rights or the constitution.

I think that the law goes against people's rights. If they did have this law it would be easy for them to racial profile and get away with it. Also people will get mad because they can get stopped and asked that question and even if they are a citizen they will have to take time out of their day to prove it.

This immigration law would make it so that if someone gets arrested, they would be checked to make sure that they are legal citizens of the United States. They wouldn't check all people though, only people that look like they wouldn't be legal citizens. They could also arrest someone with reasonable suspicion and to believe that they did something that would get them sent out of the country. Both of these things are racial profiling and I don't think that this immigration law should be passed. If it was passed, in reality the only people that would get checked would be people that aren't white or have a strong accent from somewhere else. This profiling is not right. If someone gets arrested, they should not check at all if they are legal citizens because they should have the same rights. I hope that they vote to not pass these laws.

I think that this law is unacceptable. I think that this law ca n be extremely racist. It allows for police officers to use racial profiling in order to uphold this law. The use of racial profiling, however, was not brought up in the Supreme Court hearing. I think that this law does infringe upon the National Government's right to deal with immigration. I don't think that this law necessarily prohibits any of the National Government's right, but it does allow the State more power over immigration, which was not awarded to States in the Constitution. I think that the Supreme Court should rule that this law is found unconstitutional.

I am not latino or currently residing in the southern or south western part of the country, therefore my interest in this case is purely scholarly and passive. I'm interested to see how the court decides because it may lead to interesting president as well as federal V state rights. For this case in particular though, I really don't care. Im not going to fain interest because it doesnt morally strike me one way and I can see both sides of the argument. For these reasons I will be fine with how the court decides.
